Itinerary
DAY 1: CUIABÁ – JARDIM DA AMAZONIA: REFUGE FOR BIODIVERSITY
We depart early in the morning after breakfast, when our driver and guide will pick you up at your hotel in Cuiabá for an unforgettable adventure in search of the majestic Harpy Eagle and other remarkable species that inhabit this region. Our journey takes us on a scenic four-hour drive to Jardim da Amazonia, located in a breathtaking area where the Cerrado savanna meets the Amazon rainforest. Along the way, the route provides excellent opportunities for birdwatching, with chances to spot species such as the Red-legged Seriema, Blue-and-yellow Macaw, King Vulture, Greater Rhea, and Black Caracara.
Upon arrival at the lodge, we will proceed with check-in and enjoy a delicious lunch. After a brief rest, we will set out on our first excursion through the rich and diverse
forests of the reserve. Here, the unique blend of ecosystems provides the opportunity to encounter an array of fascinating wildlife. Birds such as te Scarlet Macaw, Toco Toucan, and Rufous-tailed Jacamar can be seen soaring or perched in the trees. Mammals may include Maned Wolves, Giant Anteaters, and Howler Monkeys. Reptiles such as the Brazilian rainbow boa and tegu lizard might also be spotted along forest trails. The plant life is equally impressive, with ceiba trees, bromeliads, and numerous species of orchids creating a vibrant and colorful backdrop.
After our rewarding wildlife experience, we will return to the lodge for dinner. Following the meal, we will gather to review the checklist of bird species and other wildlife observed throughout the day. This will be followed by a brief orientation outlining the exciting activities planned for the following day. (L, D)
DAY 2: MATO GROSSO PRIMATE ROUTE AND BOAT SAFARI
After the first light of dawn awakens the forest with a chorus of birdsong, we dedicate the day to fully exploring the wonders of Jardim da Amazônia. In the morning, we follow shaded forest trails guided by local experts, immersing ourselves in the rich sounds and scents of this unique transition zone between the Amazon and the Cerrado. Along the “Mato Grosso Primate Route,” we search for seven remarkable primate species that inhabit these forests. Patient observation may reveal the critically endangered Mato Grosso Titi Monkey, an emblem of conservation in the region, as it moves in small, agile family groups among the branches. We may also encounter the Tapajo’s Saki Monkey, a master forest gardener dispersing seeds of various sizes, and the Black-faced Spider Monkey, whose powerful swings and social behavior are a spectacle to behold. Each sighting provides a window into the delicate ecological balance of this habitat, highlighting how these primates sustain forest regeneration, control insect populations, and maintain the integrity of one of Brazil’s most biodiverse areas.
In the afternoon, we return to the serene waters of the Rio Claro for an extended boat safari, allowing us to fully appreciate the crystalline river and its lush riparian forests. Wildlife is abundant: family groups of capybaras graze along the banks, dwarf caimans rest quietly in the shallows, and flocks of colorful aquatic birds sweep gracefully overhead. With some luck, the elusive South American tapir may emerge to drink at the river’s edge, or playful giant otters might frolic in the water, creating unforgettable wildlife moments. Throughout this journey, our knowledgeable guides share insights into the local ecosystems and ongoing conservation efforts, turning every observation into an educational experience. This day perfectly blends adventure, discovery, and immersion in one of Brazil’s most pristine and ecologically significant landscapes. As the day draws to a close, we will pause to enjoy a spectacular sunset before returning to the lodge for dinner following our evening briefing. (B, L, D)
DAY 3: BIRDWATCHING AND FOREST EXPLORATION
In the early morning, we dedicate our time to birdwatching in one of Brazil’s top hotspots for avian observation. Over 590 species have been cataloged in this reserve, including rare and endemic birds that make Jardim da Amazônia a world-renowned reference for bird protection. Recognized as an IBA (Important Bird Area) by BirdLife International, E-bird, The Cornell Lab, and WikiAves, this unique setting at the transition between the Amazon rainforest and the Cerrado savanna offers an extraordinary opportunity to witness the interaction of two of the planet’s richest ecosystems.
Our morning excursion takes us along the Rio Claro riparian forest, where we may encounter remarkable species such as the rare Cone-billed Tanager and various Amazonian birds. To increase our chances of observing this elusive species, we embark on a special boat tour to the Cone-billed Tanager Lagoon, also an excellent area to spot aquatic birds and enjoy the serenity of the open waters surrounded by forest.
In the afternoon, we explore the Jatobá Trail, a gentle walk of about 1 hour and 30 minutes through the forest that leads us to an impressive century-old Jatobá tree (Hymenaea courbaril), towering more than 40 meters high. This trail is not only a journey into the natural history of the forest but also a privileged site for spotting species like Gould’s Toucanet and many others that thrive in this diverse habitat. After another day filled with adventure, discoveries, and learning in these magnificent forests, we return to our lodge, where we can reflect on the experiences we’ve shared and look forward to the wonders awaiting us tomorrow. Dinner will be served at the lodge, followed by an evening of relaxation and overnight stay. (B, L, D)
DAY 4: BOAT SAFARI ALONG THE RIO CLARO & BIRD AND WILDLIFE OBSERVATION
We begin our day with an early breakfast before embarking on an unforgettable boat safari along the Rio Claro and its surrounding lakes, a region renowned for its extraordinary biodiversity. Nestled in the transitional zone between the Amazon rainforest and the Cerrado savanna, this area offers an exceptional opportunity to observe a rich tapestry of wildlife.
The Rio Claro region is a true paradise for bird enthusiasts. Here, you might encounter the impressive Jabiru Stork, the largest stork in the Americas, patrolling the riverbanks and lakes.
The vibrant Roseate Spoonbill is often seen wading gracefully through the shallows, while Wood Storks and Black-crowned Night Herons frequent the wetlands at dawn and dusk. In more forested streams and marshy areas, the elegant Capped Heron might make an appearance.
Moving from water’s edge to the forest and savanna, we can spot Yellow-faced Parrot, Red-and-green Macaws, their vibrant plumage flashing through the treetops. Look carefully at the forest edges for Helmeted Manakins and Black-fronted Nunbirds. Raptors are also plentiful: the Black-collared Hawk surveys slow-moving rivers for prey, while the Savanna Hawk keeps watch over the open grasslands, and the Snail Kite glides low over areas dense with aquatic vegetation. Keep an eye out, too, for the occasional Giant Otter gliding silently through quieter stretches of the river. After an incredible morning of birdwatching and wildlife observation, we return to the lodge for a well-deserved lunch and a brief period of relaxation.
In the afternoon, we set off on a guided hike through the trails, where different habitats emerge, offering us the chance to admire towering trees and unique wildlife. Along the way, we may encounter a diversity of canopy birds such as toucans, cotingas, tanagers, and other fascinating species. We will also visit the lagoons and pools nestled within the forest. Here, Red-bellied Macaws often roost, and mammals such as the South American Tapir may appear to drink and bathe. Between these pools and the river, all five of South America’s Kingfisher species can sometimes be spotted: Amazon, Green, Green-and-Rufous, American Pygmy, and Ringed. Additional avian highlights may include the Amazonian Motmot, White-fronted Nunbirds, Pale-bellied Tyrant-manakin, Moustached Wren, Squirrel Cuckoo, Blue-headed Parrot, Whiteeyed Parakeet, Dark-winged Trumpeter, and a variety of flycatchers and antbirds.
In the forest canopy and along its edges, groups of primates such as the Azaras’s Capuchin, Mittermeier’s Saki Monkey, and the Spider Monkey can often be seen moving through the trees. These primates feed on fruits, leaves, and insects and are key players in the forest’s ecological balance, contributing to seed dispersal and maintaining the dynamic relationship between flora and fauna in this remarkable ecosystem.
The natural trails we follow were once used by rubber tappers to transport latex to nearby towns, each step a tribute to local history and culture. During the dry season, the reserve’s lagoons become a vital source of water and food for the region’s wildlife.
As night falls, we will make our way back to the lodge to freshen up and enjoy a hearty dinner. Afterward, we’ll rest and reflect on another day of unforgettable expeditions, knowing that this is our last night in this wonderful natural setting. (B, L, D).
DAY 5: MORNING BIRDING – JOURNEY FROM JARDIM DA AMAZONIA TO CUIABÁ
We will start early for our final morning of birding around the stunning grounds of the fazenda. This outing will offer us the chance to spot birds such as Flame-crested Tanager, Bat Falcon, Tiny Hawk, Chopi Blackbird, Snow-capped and Flame-crowned Manakins, Rufous-throated Sapphire, Double-toothed and Pearl Kites, Cinereous Tinamou, Rufous-breasted Hermit, Pavonine Cuckoo, Golden-winged Parakeet, Lineated and Amazonian-barred Woodcreepers, Tooth-billed Wren, and the striking Black-girdled Barbet, among many other species of the area.
This region is also home to an impressive variety of toucans, including the Channel-billed Toucan, White-throated Toucan, Red-billed Toucan, and the Lettered Aracari, often seen moving through the canopy or perched on fruiting trees. With some luck, we may also encounter more elusive highlights such as the Dot-eared Coquette, King Vulture, Crested Eagle, the impressive Amazonian Umbrellabird, and the flagship Orange-cheeked Parrot, making this an unforgettable birding experience.
After this splendid birding excursion, we will have a nice breakfast at the fazenda before our journey back to Cuiaba. We expect to arrive at the airport in time for connections to São Paulo or any other destination of your choice (flights not included). We recommend to schedule your flights after 16h00. (B)

Departs: All year round. Arrival and departure take place from Cuiaba.
Grading: Level 2. Moderate. No trekking or great hardship is involved (although conditions will be humid and hot with some forest walks on potentially slippery ground). The holiday is generally suitable for those of all ages and degrees of fitness. There is some lengthy travel involved particularly getting in and out Jardim da Amazonia.
Please note: This is a conventional wildlife holiday with a focus on birds, mammals and general natural history. There will be a greater range of birds on this holiday and every day we can expect to spend a significant amount of time finding and enjoying birds. We will however also be seeking the fantastic mammals of this area, keeping in mind that these are more difficult to find and observe. You will need to appreciate that the neotropical mammals are largely shy and retiring, present in low densities and often crepuscular or nocturnal in nature. Although this tour spends time and effort in looking for exciting and iconic mammals including a range of rare and endangered primates, potential participants should be aware that mammals will be on view for only a small percentage of our time in the field. Time between mammal encounters will be spent largely birdwatching (alert to mammals at all times of course), as birds are the most conspicuous members of the local fauna.
° Dry Season (May to November): This period is ideal for spotting a wide variety of wildlife as animals tend to gather around shrinking water sources, making them easier to find. The lower vegetation density also improves visibility, enhancing your chances to see mammals, reptiles, and birds alike.
° Wet Season (December to April): During the rainy months, the landscape becomes lush and vibrant, attracting different species. Many animals are in their breeding season, and the increased water availability encourages a rich diversity of wildlife activity, offering unique and rewarding viewing experiences.
Weather: Jardim da Amazonia experiences a tropical climate characterized by distinct wet and dry seasons. Temperatures are generally warm throughout the year, averaging between 22°C (72°F) and 30°C (86°F). The dry season, from May to mid-November, features lower humidity and clearer skies, while the wet season, from mid-November to April, brings higher humidity and frequent rainfall, contributing to the reserve’s lush and diverse ecosystems.
Clothing: Light field clothing, including 2 or 3 pairs of pants and comfortable shirts, will be appropriate. Dark-colored or neutral clothing is requested, as white and other bright colors may frighten secretive birds. A warm sweater, winter coat and/or lightweight jacket to cut the wind, all of which could also prove particularly handy in the morning. Trails may be muddy in places, but not enough to warrant rubber boots; good quality hiking boots (waterproof is best) will suffice.
Pre-holiday: It is worth mentioning that if you prefer a more relaxed start to your holiday, you can fly out a day early, and we can arrange hotel accommodations for you. This will allow you to get a good night’s rest before the main tour begins. The tour starts with an overland journey to Jardim da Amazonia. Choosing to arrive a day earlier and spend the night in Cuiabá can help you feel more refreshed for the onward trip to the unique transition zone between the Cerrado and the Amazon the following day. Please let us know if you would like to arrange this, and we will be happy to make the necessary bookings (additional charges apply).
