Itinerary
DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN CUSCO – CITY TOUR
Upon arrival, you will be greeted by your guide, who will escort you to some of the city’s most iconic spots. Welcome to the enchanting city of Cusco, once nestled in the heart of a lake bed and home to the Inca civilization prior to the Spanish conquest. This historic gem captivates travelers from around the world with its rich blend of Inca and colonial heritage, complemented by an exceptional culinary scene.
Cusco is the ancient hub of the South American travel network. Visitors come not only to explore a unique destination but also to immerse themselves in an age-old culture and a city steeped in history, tradition, and legend. Recognized as the archaeological capital of the Americas, Cusco is also the continent’s oldest continuously inhabited city.
Massive Inca-built stone walls line most of Cusco’s central streets, forming the foundations of colonial and modern buildings. The streets are often narrow and stepped, bustling with Quechua-speaking descendants of the Incas. Located at an altitude of over 3,300 meters (10,800 feet), we will take things slowly to acclimatize, eating lightly and avoiding alcohol, no matter how tempting the Pisco Sour or a cold Cusqueña (the local beer) may be!
Inhabited by various ancient communities since time immemorial, the city holds a rich cultural tapestry waiting to be discovered. Our journey begins with a visit to the legendary Koricancha, the Temple of the Sun, which showcases exquisite architectural achievements from the reign of the renowned Inca ruler Pachacuti, the ninth sovereign of the empire. Once adorned with sheets of gold and silver, this sacred site was revered as the divine dwelling place of deities such as the sun, the moon and other celestial beings.
Our next stop is the Cusco Cathedral, a compelling testament to the fascinating syncretism that emerged during the colonial period. Its intricate design—crafted by local artisans beginning as
early as the 1560s—
embodies a unique fusion of Catholicism and indigenous Andean beliefs, blending native cultural elements with the grandeur of European artistic traditions. The exquisite wooden choir and detailed sculptures stand as striking examples of the exceptional craftsmanship and artistic expression of the colonial era.
As we conclude our exploration, we’ll head to the vibrant San Blas neighborhood, celebrated as a heart for local artisans. Wander through various workshops and ateliers of renowned artists, an excellent opportunity to acquire unique and beautifully handcrafted pieces. The narrow cobblestone streets, lined with colonial buildings, and the charming church nestled in the picturesque main plaza offer a delightful cultural experience.
We’ll enjoy a delicious lunch at one of the town’s distinguished restaurants. The rest of the day is yours to spend at leisure, whether you choose to continue exploring the town or simply relax and take in the atmosphere.
Accommodations at Hotel Casa Andina Premium (L, D)
DAY 2: SACRED VALLEY – OLLANTAYTAMBO
After a restful night and a satisfying breakfast, we embark on an exploration of the renowned Sacred Valley of the Incas. Nestled between the majestic Andean mountains, this intermontane valley was once a vital agricultural, spiritual, and political center of the Inca Empire. Its fertile lands, nourished for millennia by the winding Urubamba River, continue to support thriving communities and traditional farming practices.
The Sacred Valley served as the breadbasket of the empire, producing maize, potatoes, and other essential crops in terraced fields ingeniously adapted to the steep terrain. Dotted with ancient ruins, vibrant markets, and picturesque colonial towns, the valley offers a remarkable blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage. As we journey through this historic landscape, we’ll gain deeper insight into the ingenuity and legacy of the Inca civilization that once flourished here.
Our first stop will be the remarkable site of Moray, these enigmatic circular terraces, ingeniously constructed within a natural depression, are believed to have functioned as experimental agricultural laboratories for the Inca civilization. It is thought that a wide variety of plant species from different environments and altitudes were cultivated here, enabling Inca agronomists to assess and enhance the resilience of these crops in response to diverse environmental challenges, such as erratic weather patterns, varying soil compositions, and fluctuating water availability. To reach this fascinating site, only a brief and easy walk along flat terrain is required, making it accessible to all participants. This leisurely stroll offers a wonderful opportunity to fully appreciate both the captivating natural surroundings and the historical significance
of this ancient Inca agricultural laboratory.
We will then visit the ancient Maras Salt Pans, an outstanding site that has withstood the test of time, remaining in continuous use from pre-Inca periods to the present day. Over 4,000 individual pools have been meticulously maintained, each fed by a natural underground saline spring. The salt extraction process depends on the natural evaporation of water, primarily from mid-May to mid-Oct, producing high-quality salt that has been valued for generations and is now recognized worldwide by the international gastronomic community.
A delightful experience awaits as we head to a local restaurant, where we’ll enjoy a flavorful meal prepared with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Get ready to indulge in regional cuisine that celebrates the vibrant tastes and culinary traditions of the Andes, offering an authentic and memorable dining experience.
To conclude our enriching day, we will visit the peaceful community of Yanahuara, where you’ll have the opportunity to explore a captivating hummingbird garden and bird feeding station. This initiative was started during the pandemic by local resident César Cusihuamán and his family as a way to connect with nature and support local biodiversity. Surrounded by native flowers and strategically placed feeders, this sanctuary is home to up to 14 species of hummingbirds, including the magnificent Sword-billed Hummingbird, Shining Sunbeam, Tyrian Metaltail, Sparkling Violetear, and Black- and Green-tailed Trainbearers. You may also spot other remarkable birds such as the Red-crested Cotinga, Blue-and-yellow Tanager, Spot-winged Pigeon, the endemic Chestnut-breasted Mountain Finch, and many other exquisite species that make this place a paradise for bird lovers.
Following this nature-filled visit, our journey continues to the striking town of Ollantaytambo, where you can unwind and soak in the tranquil charm of this picturesque and historically rich destination. Often referred to as a “living Inca town,” this is one of the few places in Peru where ancient Inca urban planning remains intact and actively inhabited. Its narrow cobblestone streets, adobe houses, and centuries-old irrigation canals reflect the town’s enduring legacy. Towering above the town is the majestic archaeological complex of Ollantaytambo, once a royal estate of Emperor Pachacuti and later the site of a rare Inca victory against Spanish forces. The massive stone terraces, ceremonial centers, and impressive engineering are a testament to Inca ingenuity and spiritual depth. Whether you’re admiring the views from the ancient fortress or simply enjoying the peaceful rhythm of daily life in the valley, Ollantaytambo offers a perfect blend of history, culture, and natural beauty.

DAY 3: OLLANTAYTAMBO – MACHU PICCHU
Machu Picchu is so widely recognized through countless photographs and articles that its breathtaking setting among the mountains almost defies further description. Perched on a narrow ridge high above the Urubamba River and surrounded by steep, forested slopes, it’s easy to understand why this ancient Inca citadel remained hidden from the outside world for centuries.
Following breakfast, we will depart for the Ollantaytambo Train Station. Prepare to embark on a scenic train journey that winds through the picturesque Urubamba Valley, gradually descending into the impressive Urubamba Canyon. Over time, the powerful Urubamba River, a major tributary of the Amazon, has meticulously carved this dramatic landscape, creating a breathtaking natural corridor to admire along the way.
As we travel, keep an eye out for fascinating wildlife, including the agile Torrent Duck and the charming White-capped Dipper, while enjoying spectacular views of Mount Veronica rising majestically to 18,500 feet.
Upon arriving in Aguas Calientes, we will head to our charming hotel. Early check-in will be possible only if the rooms are available; otherwise, we will leave our luggage in the storage room.
Afterwards, a brief 10-minute walk will take us to the nearby bus stop, where we’ll board a 25-minute ride to one of the world’s most aweinspiring wonders: the iconic citadel of Machu Picchu, located approximately 1,500 feet higher. Perched on a dramatic ridge, the ancient city is surrounded on three sides by sheer cliffs that plunge to the Urubamba River far below. Towering mountains blanketed in cloud forest rise across the valley, and in the distance, majestic snow-capped peaks complete this breathtaking panorama.
Though the true purpose of Machu Picchu remains a mystery, whether fortress, royal retreat, ceremonial site, or agricultural experiment, its grandeur and setting continue to captivate all who visit. Standing amid such beauty and ingenuity, one cannot help but feel humbled by the legacy of the Inca civilization.
Following a delightful lunch at the Sanctuary Lodge, our guide will lead us on a walking tour through the ruins. As we explore this remarkable site, we’ll also keep an eye to the sky in hopes of spotting a few bird species that frequent the area, adding yet another layer of wonder to this unforgettable experience.
However, it is the lush subtropical forests far below, which we will explore tomorrow, that offer the most rewarding birding opportunities, rather than the scrub vegetation surrounding the ruins. In the vicinity of Machu Picchu itself, it is still possible to observe several notable species, including white-collared and white-tipped swifts, white-winged black-tyrant, white-crested and Sierran elaenia, blue-and-white swallow, and, with some luck, the striking Inca wren, an endemic species unique to this region.
We’ll take our time to soak in the enchanting aura and serene beauty of this extraordinary place, allowing for a deep and memorable connection with its captivating mystique. After our exploration, we’ll board the bus back to town, where a delicious dinner will be served at the elegant Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel.

DAY 4: MACHU PICCHU, BIRDING AND ARCHEOLOGICAL SITE
After a restful night’s sleep and a delightful breakfast, the early morning hours will be dedicated to exploring the hotel grounds in search of a variety of captivating hummingbirds including the Long-tailed Sylph, Speckled Hummingbird, Booted Racket-tail, Chestnut-breasted Coronet and more. Other sightings may include Andean Motmot, Speckled-faced Parrot, Dusky-green Oropendola, Brown-capped Vireo and the striking Andean Cock of the Rock.
We will ascend by bus to the Machu Picchu ruins in the morning, accompanied by our local guide. This second visit offers the opportunity to immerse ourselves once more in the mystique of one of the world’s greatest wonders. As we walk along the trails and take in the natural beauty of the cloud forest, we may encounter a stunning variety of birds. The area is home to numerous hummingbirds and tanagers, including chestnut-breasted coronets, collared incas, green-and-white hummingbirds, green violetears, and with luck, the dazzling booted racquet-tail.
Following our visit, we will return to our hotel to enjoy a leisurely afternoon. The hotel’s exquisite gardens provide ideal conditions for birdwatching, where we may spot species such as the Blue-necked, Saffron-crowned, Silver-beaked, Blue-gray, and Silvery Tanagers, among many other avian treasures.
Notably, the hotel also features a meticulously maintained orchid garden, adding to the natural beauty of the surroundings. We will have the opportunity to explore one of the many trails on the hotel grounds in search of species we may have missed earlier. Among the birds we’ll be looking for are the charming Ocellated Piculet, the endemic Masked Fruiteater, Golden-olive Woodpecker, Capped Conebill, Versicolored Barbet, and others.
Guests may take advantage of the hotel’s wide range of services, amenities, and facilities, and enjoy lunch at their own expense, either at the hotel or in the town of Aguas Calientes, which also offers excellent dining options and is well worth a visit.
As the day draws to a close, we’ll enjoy a relaxing dinner, the perfect way to unwind after a day filled with wonder, discovery, and natural beauty.

Weather: The dry season in Cusco runs from mid-April through mid-November, but showers are possible at any time. Days in Cusco are warm, with temperatures reaching 70 F. Early morning temperatures in the Sacred Valley in September are likely to be around 60 F, but it is often warm at midday, reaching 75 F. Evenings are cooler. Machu Picchu, in the tropical cloud forest, is relatively humid, and temperatures there can reach 80 F. Overall, participants should expect pleasant, sunny days with cool mornings and warm to hot afternoons. The chance of precipitation is low (although sudden rains can occur at Machu Picchu, given its cloud forest location).
Clothing: Except for the days in and around Machu Picchu, this tour stays in the dry Andean valleys, where we expect cool mornings, warm to hot days, and little or no rain. Around Machu Picchu, we may experience high humidity, rain, and some mosquitoes. Light field clothing and casual attire are suitable for this trip. The following items are recommended: ° Pants and Shorts: A couple of pairs of pants are essential. Many people prefer lightweight pants made of cotton or other material, but denim, though not as comfortable, is certainly acceptable.
° Pants and long-sleeved shirts made of lightweight, durable materials with multiple pockets and ventilated seams are popular. These provide useful protection from the sun and occasional biting insects.
° Shirts: A couple of long-sleeved t-shirts in addition to other comfortable styles suitable for warm weather. We do not recommend short-sleeved shirts as much, as they offer no protection from biting insects or the sun.
° Hat: A hat, particularly of a wide-brimmed style, for protection from the sun is essential. At the very least, please bring a baseball-style cap.
° Outerwear: Dry to warm weather is anticipated on this trip, but a warm sweater or jacket will come in handy for the mornings and evenings, especially in Cusco. In the event of sudden rain at Machu Picchu, you’ll want to have a water-repellent jacket as well. ° Swimsuit: The hotel in Machu Picchu has a hot tub.
° FOOTWEAR: We recommend a good trail-walking shoe or light hiking boot when in the field. Athletic shoes are acceptable. Lighter shoes or sandals will come in handy when relaxing around the hotels.
Pre-holiday: If you would prefer a more relaxed start to your holiday, you are welcome to arrive in Cusco a day early. We can arrange hotel accommodations for you, giving you the opportunity to enjoy a good night’s rest before the tour begins. Arriving early also allows time to adjust to the altitude, so you can begin the tour feeling more refreshed and acclimatized. Please let us know if you would like to do this so we can make the necessary arrangements (at an additional charge).
